Event Notes

MARTA PEREIRA DA COSTA - A PORTUGUESE GUITAR

Marta Pereira da Costa is the world’s first and only professional portuguese guitar female player in Fado. In 2014 she was distinguished by Amália Rodrigues Foundation with the "Instrumentist Award". Marta was also honored by the Amalia Rodrigues Foundation with the “Instrumentist Award” in 2014. Before releasing her debut album she had already performed abroad in many countries as well as indoor.

It was in 2012 that Marta decided to abandon her work as a civil engineer in order to pursue her professional career in music as a Portuguese Guitar player.  In March that year she gave her first solo concert in Toronto.

In 2013 she was invited to tour in Spain, France and also played in S. Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. Later, between October and November, she made her first tour around the East Coast of the USA, performing in 10 different venues like the mythical Johnny´s D in Boston and in the Drom in New York, besides several workshops of Fado music at Universities and High Schools. In 2014 she was invited to return and perform in Kansas City, a reference of Jazz.

Her album was released in 2016 with Warner Music Label and had the best critics either by the media and the public.
The record had the participation of well known artists from Portugal and abroad such as the bass player Richard Bona in the theme " Encontro" or even the artist Dulce Pontes giving voice to the song "É ele que me canta a mim". Another special guest was the iranian singer Tara Tiba that played the song "Moon". At the same time the record pays tribute to the her Fado and Portuguese Guitar references like Carlos Paredes, Fontes Rocha, Mário Pacheco, amongst others.
Since the edition the concerts haven´t stopped and the tour presentations "A woman, a guitar" added more and more important and well-known venues, national and internationally, to the agenda such as Real Teatro Santa Cecilia for the Brass in Jazz Festival, BBK Room in Bilbao, Cordoba Guitar Festival, NOS ALIVE , Mimo Amarante Festival and also Waterloo Uptown Jazz Festival in Ontario, just to name a few from last year.
Also last year the record was edited abroad for the first time in Japan.

The live performance is always a surprising and unquotable moment. On stage Marta adds what can not be recorded: the heart of the woman that made the guitar an extend of her soul. This will be a unique chance to watch her live. Don´t miss it!
