The Ethiopian New Year celebration, Enkutatash, means “gift of jewels” in Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia. It commemorates the return of Queen Sheba from her visit to King Solomon in Jerusalem, where she received precious gifts from him. It also marks the end of the rainy season and the beginning of sunny days and warmer weather.
