To Alma Fernández, the daughter of Rafa Fernández, one of the most important Costa Rican artists of all times, art has always been part of her personal life. The same can be said about her professional life: she has her degree in art history, she is the owner of the Kandinsky Gallery in Costa Rica, the organizer and judge of multiple art contests.
However, as an artist, Alma remained quiet for 44 years. Due to the inevitable references to her father, Alma wanted to form her own identity. As of the beginning of 2007, she felt that she had found her own language, and so Alma showed the world her art. Through this newfound voice she showed her first exhibit, titled, “The Other Half”. Then came a collective exhibit, and finally the series “Shadows”, which ends the process of revelation.
The theme of Alma Fernández’s July exposition, taking place at the Embassy of Costa Rica, “Lakes and Volcanes”, is a metaphor of the history of love in nature: he is the volcano, she the lake. The majority of the sixteen paintings are 40 x 30 centimeters of mixed techniques.
